The Australian Parkinson’s Mission is addressing a critical gap in Parkinson’s disease care: the lack of treatments that slow or halt disease progression. While current therapies manage symptoms and improve quality of life, they do not prevent the inevitable decline toward complications such as dementia, falls, and nursing home placement. The APM is working to change this by pioneering ‘smart’ disease-modifying trials that incorporate novel blood-based biomarkers to confirm target engagement and disease modification, alongside genomic screening. This approach will allow future precision medicine approaches to match the right patient to the right treatment – an outcome that would revolutionise the treatment of Parkinson’s.
